Kazakhstan’s Ambitious Energy Transition Goals

Kazakhstan has established a comprehensive policy framework to drive its energy transition:

  • Green Economy Concept: 15% of electricity from renewables by 2030; 50% from alternative and renewable sources by 2050.
  • Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2060: gradual phase-out of coal, expansion of RES, smart grids, and decarbonisation of buildings.
  • Fuel and Energy Complex Concept 2023–2029: implementation of 4,000 MW of RES projects, including energy storage systems, by 2029.

The Law on Renewable Energy defines eligible sources as solar, wind, hydrodynamic water, geothermal, and anthropogenic resources such as biomass, biogas, and consumer waste—all forming the backbone of Kazakhstan’s energy transition.
